Guilin vs Yangshuo vs Xingping: where to stay

For a first visit focused on the limestone scenery, spend most of your nights around Yangshuo. Add a Guilin night if you want the full Li River cruise, a city evening or a convenient stop before Longji. Choose Xingping for a quieter Li River stay and access to Yangshuo railway station. The biggest accommodation decision is whether you want restaurants outside the door or countryside outside the window.

Which base suits your trip?

Guilin city, Yangshuo town and Xingping are separate places. A search for a ‘Guilin hotel’ can return properties across the wider region. Read the address and map location before comparing rooms: a city hotel does not put you beside the Yulong River, and Yangshuo railway station is near Xingping rather than Yangshuo town.

For two nights, choose one base. For three nights with a cruise, one in Guilin followed by two around Yangshuo is a practical split. If the cruise is not a priority, go directly to Yangshuo and spend those three nights in one hotel. The three-day itinerary explains how each version works.

Guilin: stay near Shan Lake and Rong Lake for a short city visit

Look around Shan Lake, Rong Lake and the streets toward Zhengyang pedestrian street if you have one city evening. This puts a public lakeside stroll, the Sun and Moon Pagodas viewed from shore, and dinner in the same central area. Dongxi Lane is another useful dining and browsing area north of the lakes. A hotel by Guilin North or West station serves a train connection, but it adds a car journey to this evening route.

Keep the Guilin night before a full Li River cruise: the departure piers are outside the city, and the boat takes you onward to Yangshuo. For Longji, Guilin is also a more convenient starting point than Yangshuo. If you arrive early enough to reach Yangshuo comfortably and want neither a city visit nor a cruise, there is no need to stay in Guilin solely because your flight lands there.

Yangshuo town: choose the edge of West Street for convenience

Town is the easiest base if you want to walk to a choice of restaurants, arrange day trips and return independently after dinner. Start your search on the road-accessible edges of the West Street area, including the Pantao Road and Diecui Road sides. West Street itself has bars, music and late foot traffic; a room above the pedestrian street is a poor bet for an early night.

Before booking, ask whether the room faces a bar or busy road and where a car can stop with luggage. ‘Near West Street’ can mean a quiet side lane or the center of the nightlife. For a two-night first visit with no bicycle or scooter, a town hotel plus a booked car to the Yulong River is often simpler than a remote property with dinner transfers every night.

Yulong River: Jima, Jiuxian or the lower valley

Jima and the nearby Chaoyang area work well for the central river paths, while Jiuxian places you farther up the valley near an older village setting. Around Gongnong Bridge and the lower river, accommodation suits the finishing area of several raft routes and outings into the Ten-Mile Gallery. These locations support different walking days; a hotel advertised as ‘Yulong River’ is not automatically close to your chosen pier.

Choose a countryside stay for at least two nights so you have a full day there. Ask the property to name its nearest public river-path entrance, confirm dinner availability and quote a return town transfer. Also ask where the car stops: some last sections are village lanes. For the actual raft piers and a walk that works without riding, use the Yulong River day guide.

Xingping: stay for Li River scenery rather than daily trips to Yangshuo

Xingping has the old town, riverbank viewpoints associated with the 20-yuan note and a shorter road connection to Yangshuo railway station. It makes sense for a night before or after a train if you want to explore this part of the Li River. It is less convenient for two consecutive days of Yulong River activities: the road journey to Yangshuo adds time in both directions.

For a straightforward arrival, choose a property with road access on the old-town side of the river and confirm the station pickup. Some river-view accommodation is on the opposite bank or farther along rural roads. Ask whether the quoted transfer reaches the hotel door, involves a ferry, or uses a longer road approach, especially after dark. A map pin across the water can look deceptively close to the old town.

How to divide two, three or four nights

With two nights, stay in Yangshuo town or one Yulong village and give the middle day to the countryside. With three nights and a full cruise, use Guilin → Yangshuo → Yangshuo. This leaves a city evening, a cruise transfer day and a complete countryside day before departure the following morning. A late flight on the countryside day can shorten that to two nights, but reduces the time available outdoors.

With four nights, add Xingping only if you want a different stretch of river and can use it before or after your Yangshuo train. Otherwise, an extra Yangshuo night gives you a weather buffer without another hotel move. Longji is a separate northern detour; read the day trip versus overnight comparison before allocating it a night from an already short countryside stay.

A recommended three-night stay with the full Li River cruise.
  1. Night 1: central Guilin, near the lakes; confirm the next morning’s pier pickup.
  2. Day 2: Li River cruise south to Yangshuo, carrying luggage as agreed with the operator.
  3. Nights 2 and 3: the same Yangshuo town or Yulong countryside hotel.
  4. Departure morning: transfer to the exact station or airport on your booking.

What to confirm with the hotel before paying

Send your arrival point, arrival time and the number of suitcases when requesting a pickup quote. Ask for the complete price per vehicle, including tolls and any late arrival charge. A quote to ‘Yangshuo’ can mean town rather than your countryside address. Compare it with the airport and railway transfer options before booking a nonrefundable room.

For families or anyone avoiding stairs, confirm the path from the car to reception, lift access to the room and meal options within an easy walk. Use recent guest comments to assess noise and construction, then ask the property about the specific room category you intend to book. For help arranging a village pickup or choosing between two locations, a Guilin Local Pal can help connect the accommodation choice to your actual day plan.
