Li River cruise: 3-star vs 4-star, tickets & piers

The full Li River cruise works particularly well on the day you move from Guilin to a hotel in Yangshuo. Choose a 3-star boat for a lower fare or a 4-star boat for more cabin comfort, book the exact departure pier and arrange your transfer there. Allow roughly four to five hours on the river and most of the day from hotel to hotel. A standard downstream cruise does not include a road journey back to Guilin.

3-star or 4-star: which cruise is worth booking?

Choose 3-star if seeing the river is your priority and you are happy with a simpler cabin and meal arrangement. Choose 4-star if you expect to spend more of the journey seated indoors and value extra space or a more substantial meal package. Both travel through the same main river landscape on the full downstream route, so choose by comfort and the package inclusions.

Compare the actual vessel and cabin product, especially if a listing offers upper-deck or VIP seating. A star category does not promise a window table, seats together or a private space. The official 3-star vessel description includes modern panoramic windows, while its 4-star description emphasizes spacious cabins and dining. Check the vessel photos and the cabin named in your booking.

Booking with a passport and comparing packages

The scenic area links its official WeChat ticket channel, 漓江售票处, from the ticket information page. If the booking flow does not support your passport or payment method, use your hotel or an established booking service that can issue a passport ticket. Request the full Guilin-to-Yangshuo downstream cruise, the date and star category; a short Xingping sightseeing trip is a different product.

Before paying, have the seller confirm the departure time and pier, arrival pier, cabin class, meal and hotel-transfer inclusions. Give the passport details for each traveler and ask how to collect or validate the ticket. Bring the original passports and booking confirmation. At the terminal, use the staffed document-check channel if the automatic gates cannot read your passport; check the vessel and seat numbers on the issued ticket.

For a family or group, request seats together during booking rather than assuming one payment guarantees the same table. If lunch matters, select it before checkout and read what is included. A meal sold separately onboard can be a different product at a different price from the prebooked set meal.

Getting to Mopanshan or Zhujiang pier

Mopanshan (磨盘山码头) and Zhujiang (竹江码头) are separate terminals outside central Guilin. Mopanshan is the usual 3-star departure and Zhujiang the usual 4-star departure, but the pier printed on your confirmation controls. Send that location to your driver; do not use a generic ‘Li River cruise’ map pin or confuse either terminal with a city-center sightseeing dock.

A prebooked hotel transfer or taxi is the most straightforward option with luggage. Allow roughly 45–60 minutes from central Guilin, plus at least 45 minutes at the pier for ticket handling and boarding; add more time on holidays or if your operator asks you to arrive earlier. A shared pickup can take longer because it calls at other hotels. Confirm the pickup time the evening before.

The scenic area’s transport page lists bus 9 from Tian’etang to Zhujiang, plus customized services from city stops and Guilin North toward the cruise terminals. Those options require checking the current timetable and exact destination in the linked WeChat transport service. Bus 9 is not listed as a service to both terminals. For a fixed morning sailing, use a confirmed connection rather than assuming a city bus will line up with boarding.

A complete Guilin-to-Yangshuo cruise day

For an illustrative 09:30 sailing, plan to leave a central Guilin hotel around 07:45 and reach the correct pier around 08:30. After ticket checks and boarding, settle into the assigned seat and use the open deck when available. Budget four to five hours on the water, putting arrival roughly around 13:30–14:30. Your operator’s actual sailing and boarding instructions take priority over this example.

Eat your included or preordered lunch onboard, or bring a simple snack if your booking has no meal. Take sun protection and a light rain layer: deck conditions can feel quite different from the cabin. Keep the afternoon in Yangshuo light, with hotel check-in and a walk or dinner near West Street. Save a longer countryside outing for the Yangshuo and Yulong River day.

Luggage and getting to your Yangshuo hotel

Travelers commonly take suitcases on the full cruise, which makes a hotel move practical. Confirm your boat’s allowance and storage arrangements before booking, especially for large cases, a stroller or mobility equipment. Keep your passport and valuables with you, and allow for gangways, steps and walking between the landing and the vehicle pickup area.

The scenic area names Longtoushan and Shuidongmen among the Yangshuo arrival terminals. Ask which one your boat uses, then have the hotel specify a reachable pickup point outside the terminal. A driver cannot necessarily meet you beside the boat. Passenger reports differ on how easy it is to get a ride at the exit, so arranging the meeting point in advance is more useful than relying on an advertised curbside transfer.

If your hotel is near the Yulong River, allow a separate road transfer after landing; arrival in Yangshuo does not mean arrival at a countryside hotel. Send the hotel your cruise confirmation and luggage count when organizing pickup. You can then walk out at your own pace instead of negotiating transport while managing bags.

Returning to Guilin or choosing a shorter river trip

If you are sleeping in Guilin again, book the return road transport separately or choose a package that explicitly includes it. Allow roughly 1½–2 hours from Yangshuo to central Guilin as a planning estimate, with extra time for congestion. The official transport page also lists a customized service back toward the departure piers; that is not the same destination as your Guilin hotel.

For a short stay based in Yangshuo, a sectional river excursion near Xingping can be a better fit than first traveling back toward Guilin for the full cruise. Check the exact start, finish and duration. The official route overview lists several different products, including an upstream Yangshuo–Yangdi return route, so ‘Li River cruise’ alone is not enough to identify a ticket.

Keep a little flexibility around the cruise date. High water, low water or severe weather can alter or suspend a sailing; check your operator’s change and refund terms before paying. Avoid a tight same-day flight or train connection after the river journey. The three-day Guilin and Yangshuo itinerary leaves the cruise as the main activity of the moving day.
