Guilin & Yangshuo 3-day itinerary: cruise, countryside & hotel plan

Spend Day 1 around Guilin’s lakes, take the Li River cruise to Yangshuo on Day 2, and give Day 3 to the Yulong River countryside. Stay one night in Guilin and two around Yangshuo, departing the following morning. This route makes the cruise part of your move between hotels. If you have only two nights or do not want the cruise, use the shorter alternatives below.

Book one Guilin night, two Yangshuo nights and the cruise

This plan starts when you are ready to explore Guilin on Day 1, ideally by late morning or early afternoon. Book that night near Shan Lake or Rong Lake, then keep the same Yangshuo hotel for Nights 2 and 3. Leave on Day 4. If you arrive late on the first evening, do the lakeside walk after dinner and accept a shorter city visit rather than squeezing it into the cruise morning.

Before reserving the boat, decide between a town hotel and a Yulong village using the where-to-stay comparison. Reserve the full Li River cruise with passport details and check the pier pickup and luggage terms. The cruise guide covers 3-star versus 4-star boats, fares and the departure piers. Treat the visiting times below as planning estimates, with your issued cruise time taking priority.

Day 1: Guilin’s lakes and a city evening

After leaving bags at the hotel and having lunch, start at the public shore of Shan Lake (杉湖). View the Sun and Moon Pagodas from the lakeside, then continue west toward Rong Lake (榕湖) and the Ancient South Gate area (古南门). Allow about two hours for this easy-paced central walk, including photographs and a seated break. You can enjoy the waterfront without buying a pagoda-entry ticket or a night-cruise package.

If you arrive in the morning and want Elephant Trunk Hill (象鼻山), visit before the lake walk and allow another 1–1½ hours. Scenic admission is free, with controlled entry and current registration arrangements at the entrance; bring your passport and ask the staffed entrance for help if the booking form does not accept it. Temporary event closures can change access, so use the lakes as the fixed part of an arrival day.

Have dinner around Zhengyang pedestrian street or Dongxi Lane, then return to the hotel. Guilin rice noodles make a useful casual lunch; a seated dinner is easier if you have just arrived with luggage. Confirm the next morning’s pickup with the cruise provider and have breakfast arranged before leaving. A lakes night cruise is optional, but it is not needed to complete this day.

Day 2: Li River cruise to Yangshuo with your luggage

Leave the hotel for the exact pier on your confirmation: Mopanshan (磨盘山码头) and Zhujiang (竹江码头) are outside central Guilin. Allow roughly 45–60 minutes for the road journey in ordinary traffic, plus the provider’s check-in allowance. Use its confirmed pickup time rather than choosing your own departure from the hotel. A morning cruise commonly occupies around four to five hours on the water, with duration affected by river conditions.

Bring your original passport, the booking confirmation and only the luggage the operator has agreed to carry. Confirm whether lunch and pier transport are included. Once on board, settle the bags where instructed and use the open deck when permitted. This is the day’s main experience; adding another major attraction after arrival makes the transfer unnecessarily hurried.

At Yangshuo, disembark at the landing on your ticket and travel to the hotel. A town property can be close to the arrival area; a countryside property needs another car journey. Check in, then have dinner near the hotel or browse West Street if you are staying in town. Arrange a pickup for the following morning and keep the same hotel for the second Yangshuo night.

Day 3: Yulong River rafting or a complete riverside walk

For a short raft outing, book Shuiedi (水厄底码头) to Zonghe pier beside Gongnong Bridge (综合码头 / 工农桥). Arrange a car to the starting pier around 09:00, allowing the booking’s check-in time. The operator lists RMB 200 per two-person raft; allow roughly 30–45 minutes on the water, plus the queue. Have the driver collect you at the finishing pier, then take lunch in the lower Yulong countryside or back at your hotel.

If you prefer to stay on land, start at Jima pier and follow the official Jima riverside trail toward the Yulong Yinxiang Reception Centre (印象接待中心). Its full length is about five kilometers. Allow two to three hours with stops, book collection at the finishing point and have lunch afterward. The Yulong River guide gives the named intermediate stops, longer raft options and a shorter walk for families.

Keep the afternoon for a slower village outing or time at the hotel. With light rain, shorten the walk and take a long lunch; if weather or river notices suspend rafting, use the land option only while conditions remain suitable. A second night in Yangshuo means you can finish the countryside day without watching the clock for a distant station.

Departure on Day 4, or a two-day version with one base

Collect the bags and transfer to the station printed on your ticket. Yangshuo station is near Xingping, not in town; allow roughly an hour from town and longer from some Yulong hotels, then add station-entry time. For Guilin Airport, the direct coach’s stated journey is about 90 minutes from its Yangshuo boarding point, with a separate hotel transfer and airport check-in allowance. Use the arrival and transfer guide to book the complete connection.

For two sightseeing days and two nights, arrive in Yangshuo the evening before the first sightseeing day and stay both nights in the same hotel. Use Day 1 for the Yulong outing. On Day 2, have breakfast and collect your bags; if a late train leaves from Yangshuo station, transfer to Xingping for a riverbank stroll and lunch, with luggage storage arranged, before continuing to the station. For an earlier departure or a Guilin Airport flight, keep the final walk close to the hotel and leave for your booked transfer instead. This shorter version skips the Guilin city segment and full cruise.

A three-day itinerary without the full Li River cruise

Stay all three nights around Yangshuo. On Day 1, take a direct airport or station transfer, check in and explore the nearby village or town before dinner. On Day 2, use the Yulong raft or walking plan. On Day 3, visit Xingping for the old town and public riverbank views, then return to your hotel; if an onward train fits the following day, you can instead spend the final night in Xingping.

Allow roughly 45–60 minutes each way between Yangshuo town and Xingping. Walk through the old town toward the Li River, then use the public riverbank area for the limestone views associated with the 20-yuan note. Leave two to three hours for the walk and lunch. This is a land-based alternative to the full cruise, so it does not depend on finding another boat ticket. If you choose a short local river ride, confirm its own pier, duration and return before adding it.

How much time to add for Longji Rice Terraces

Add a full day and another Guilin night for a Longji day trip. A practical four-day order is Guilin arrival and lakes → Longji and return to Guilin → Li River cruise to Yangshuo → Yulong countryside, departing the following morning. That uses two Guilin nights and two Yangshuo nights. Start the Longji day from Guilin rather than driving north again after moving to Yangshuo.

For a more relaxed terrace overnight, add two calendar days to the original route: arrive in Guilin, spend the next night in Longji, return for a Guilin night before the morning cruise, then continue south. You can shorten that by transferring directly from Longji to Yangshuo and dropping the full cruise. The Longji planning guide compares those choices, the village areas and the walking involved.
