Pudong Airport to your hotel: your first hour in Shanghai

You have landed, your phone is searching for a signal and the signs offer four different ways into Shanghai. Start here, one decision at a time.

The short answer

After immigration, baggage collection and customs, get a working connection and open your hotel’s Chinese address. Metro Line 2 is the budget route to central Shanghai; a licensed taxi is simpler with heavy bags or a late arrival. The Maglev ends at Longyang Road, and the Airport Link Line heads towards Hongqiao. Compare the full route to your hotel, including any transfers.

01

Arrivals, baggage collection and airport transfers

Follow your arrival route through immigration, collect checked bags and pass customs before looking for city transport. Some flights use a satellite concourse and an internal airport train, so the first train you see may simply take you to the main terminal. Keep following Baggage Claim and Arrivals until you are landside.

Check whether you have arrived at T1 or T2; the pickup areas and meeting points differ. If your hotel has arranged a transfer, follow its written meeting instructions and confirm the booking name with the driver.

Allow time for immigration and baggage collection before the journey into town. If you have booked a transfer, check how the driver handles flight delays and waiting time.

02

How to get internet access at Pudong Airport

If you bought a travel eSIM, select it for mobile data and follow that provider’s roaming instructions. Keep your normal SIM active if you need it for bank or app verification texts. A data-only eSIM gives you internet access, not automatically a local phone number or working voice calls.

If you still need a connection, use an official airport Wi-Fi or telecom service point and ask staff about the login route for your passport or overseas number. Airport Wi-Fi authentication can be the awkward part, so do not make a ride request until the phone can stay connected outside the arrivals hall. A local SIM purchase normally needs your passport; confirm data, calls, SMS and the full price before choosing a plan.

While connected, save your hotel’s Chinese name, full address, phone number and a map screenshot. Include the branch name: several hotels in the same chain can share an almost identical English name. Keep the booking confirmation available offline too.

03

How to pay for transport from Pudong Airport

Open the payment app you set up before flying and check that you can still sign in. For DiDi, look at the payment method inside the ride account as well. A foreign card saved in Alipay is useful, but it does not mean every transport checkout has already been activated.

If the app will not cooperate, get some RMB from an airport ATM displaying your card network or a staffed exchange counter. Read any fee or conversion choice before agreeing. Keep smaller notes for a taxi or ticket counter. You can finish a difficult identity review later with a charger and reception nearby; first you need a workable route and payment method for that route.

04

Metro, Maglev, taxi or DiDi: which should you take?

Put the hotel into a live map before choosing. A room near a central Line 2 station is a very different destination from a hotel near Hongqiao, a Disney-area resort or an address several stops from the nearest metro. Compare the whole journey, including stairs, a transfer and the walk with your bags.

Pudong Airport transport, in practical terms
OptionWhere it helps
Metro Line 2Budget travel to central stops such as People’s Square or East Nanjing Road. About an hour to People’s Square station and roughly ¥7; add terminal and hotel walks.
Maglev + another rideAn approximately eight-minute train to Longyang Road, followed by metro or a car. Standard one-way fare is ¥50 before the onward journey.
Airport Link LineA roughly 40-minute ride towards Hongqiao Airport T2, with a full-route fare of ¥26. Check the onward connection if you need Hongqiao Railway Station.
Licensed taxi or DiDiA direct hotel drop-off. A taxi to People’s Square is around ¥180 and about 50 minutes in the airport authority’s example; traffic, destination and night pricing change the total.

Those are example fares and travel times, not landing-to-hotel estimates. For a family with several bags, compare the cost of the whole group with a car, as well as the number of transfers.

05

Taking Metro Line 2 or the Maglev from Pudong Airport

For Line 2, follow Metro signs and check the destination on the platform. Buy a ticket for your destination using the machine or staffed counter, or use an accepted transport payment method you have already activated. Opening Alipay’s ordinary payment code is different from opening an activated transport code. If the gate will not accept what you show, ask staff before paying again.

For the Maglev, follow the Maglev signs and buy the correct ticket. At Longyang Road, leave the Maglev system and follow the onward metro or pickup instructions. The quick airport stretch is enjoyable, but luggage, a queue and another fare still belong in your plan. Keep the final metro exit number with your hotel address so the last walk starts on the right side of the road.

Where to find taxis and DiDi pickups at Pudong Airport

For a licensed taxi, follow Taxi signs to the official queue and show the driver the hotel’s Chinese address. Ask about payment before setting off if you plan to use a physical card. Use the meter and keep the receipt. Someone offering a ride while you walk through arrivals is not the same thing as the managed taxi rank.

For DiDi, select the correct terminal and read the pickup instructions in the app. The assigned point can be in a parking building on a different level from arrivals. Reach that area before requesting, then note the zone, bay or numbered pillar. Send that exact landmark through the trip chat instead of only saying that you are “outside the airport.” Match the plate and car details before getting in.

Pickup floors and routes differ between terminals and services. If the app’s instructions and the signs disagree, ask airport staff while you still have a connection. An official taxi is a sensible fallback when the phone or pickup process is failing.

07

Getting to your hotel after the last train

Look up the last usable service after you have your bags. The scheduled landing time is not the time you reach a station, and a late train to Longyang Road is no help if your onward connection has finished. A licensed taxi or confirmed transfer is often the easiest late-night choice.

Pudong also has a night airport bus. Ask the staffed transport counter whether the current route stops close enough to your hotel and how you will cover the last stretch. It is worth considering when the route fits; it is less attractive when you would arrive with bags on an unfamiliar road far from reception.

Tell the hotel if you will arrive after midnight, especially if your booking starts on the previous calendar date. Keep the original passport ready for check-in. Once you have reached the hotel, plug in the phone, save tomorrow’s destination and leave the remaining app setup until you have had a rest.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Maglev go to the Bund?
No. It runs between Pudong Airport and Longyang Road. Plan another metro or car journey to the Bund or your hotel, and check the walking distance from the final stop.
Can I use the Airport Link Line for a Hongqiao high-speed train?
It takes you to Hongqiao Airport T2, where you still need to transfer to Hongqiao Railway Station. Allow time for that transfer, station security and boarding in addition to the roughly 40-minute airport rail journey.
What if my phone has no data and Alipay will not open?
Stay in the staffed arrivals area, ask for help with connectivity and arrange a payment method such as RMB cash. Use the official taxi or ticket counter rather than walking into an app pickup area without a confirmed ride.
