How to book China train tickets with a foreign passport
The train ride is usually the easy part. Here’s how to get a confirmed ticket, put the right passport details on it and turn up at the right station.

The short answer
You can book with a valid foreign passport through China Railway’s English 12306 website or app, a booking service such as Trip.com, or a station ticket counter. Use the same passport for booking and travel. Check that the ticket is issued, rather than just requested, and keep the exact departure station in your travel notes.

Where to book China train tickets
For a straightforward journey, start with the official English 12306 site. It lets foreign passport holders register, search and manage bookings directly. If you prefer a familiar checkout and English customer support, compare a booking service’s final price. A service fee, currency conversion or optional add-on can make its total different from the railway fare.
A staffed station counter is a useful fallback when online identity verification stalls. Bring your original passport and the journey you want, including the date and station names. Visit before travel day to leave time for verification and a choice of available trains.
| Route | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|
| 12306 English website or Railway 12306 app | Book directly with China Railway and manage the ticket in the same account. |
| An English booking service | Use its checkout and support; compare the full total and refund terms. |
| Station ticket window | Get a person to inspect your passport or help with a booking problem. |

How to register on 12306 and verify your passport
On 12306, use Register and choose your nationality. The English registration form accepts foreign passports and asks for an email address. Enter an address you can open during the trip, then follow the activation message. If it does not arrive, check spam and use the resend option.
Email activation and identity verification are separate steps. After registering, open your personal information or passenger list and check the document status. If verification fails, compare the details with your passport, follow the upload instructions, or take the original to a station window. Allow time for the review before tickets go on sale for your travel date.

How to enter your name on 12306
Keep your passport open at the information page while filling in the passenger details. Check the passport number and expiry date carefully. If you are booking for someone else, add them as a passenger using the details from their passport.
12306’s English form has one Name field and a link called Check the rules for filling out passport information. Open it. For the common layout with Surname and Given Names, the railway’s example puts the surname before the given names. If the passport says Surname: MORGAN and Given Names: ALEX JAMES, the corresponding example is MORGAN ALEX JAMES. Include the middle names that belong to the given-name field.
If another booking service splits surname and given names into two boxes, fill those boxes as labelled. For a single legal name, an unusually long name or a passport with a different layout, follow the provider’s specific example or ask support before paying.

China Railway’s sample document explains which passport fields belong in the form. It is an instructional example, not a traveler’s passport.

Choosing stations, travel dates and seats
Shanghai Hongqiao and Shanghai Railway Station are different places. Beijing South, Beijing West and Beijing Railway Station are different places too. Search the city to explore your options, then check the actual stations attached to the train you select. Save the Chinese departure-station name for your taxi or map app and look up the journey from your hotel before choosing an early departure.
The normal advance-sales window is 15 days including today, so the furthest date is usually 14 days ahead; release times differ by station. Use the sale-opening information shown by 12306 for your journey. A service accepting a request months ahead is collecting a reservation request for later purchase. The ticket is confirmed only once the service has bought it after sales open.
Choose a seat class and review the date in China local time. A window or adjacent-seat request is a preference until the issued ticket shows the allocation. For a first booking, a direct train is simpler than a tight connection, especially when a change involves two stations in the same city.
05
Paying for your ticket and checking confirmation
Before paying, read the passenger details, departure and arrival stations, train number, date, seat class and full amount. Check which extras are selected. Finish payment within the deadline on the screen, then return to the order itself. A bank authorization or a message saying your request was received is not the same as a confirmed railway booking.
Keep the issued journey details accessible offline: train number, station, departure time, carriage and seat. If the status is pending or waitlisted, check the stated deadline and cancellation conditions. If your bank shows money reserved but there is no issued ticket, ask the seller to confirm the first order before buying a duplicate.

Station security, passport checks and boarding
For a first visit to a large station, aim to arrive about an hour before departure; allow more if you still need a ticket-window check or are traveling over a major holiday. You will pass an identity check and baggage security before reaching the waiting hall.
Carry the original passport used for the ticket. An itinerary screenshot helps staff find the booking, but it does not replace the document. Where a passport reader is available, follow the gate instructions. If it cannot read your document, use the staffed lane for a manual check.
In the waiting hall, find your train number on the departure board and note the boarding gate. Gates close before the advertised departure, so head there when boarding is called. On the platform, match the carriage number, board promptly and find your seat. Keep the passport handy when leaving the destination station as well.

The station entrance includes an identity check. Look for a staffed lane when your passport needs manual inspection.

Seat availability, departure time and service fees matter. If you are already at the station and the app will not help, take the booking and passport to the service window.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to collect a paper ticket?
- For an e-ticket journey, usually no. Keep the booking details and use the original passport attached to it. An itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not a boarding ticket. Follow any specific instructions attached to your booking.
- Can one account buy tickets for my family?
- You can add other travelers as passengers, with each person’s own document details. The English 12306 site is designed for foreign passports, so check another supported channel if your group uses different document types.
- Can I fix a spelling mistake at the gate?
- Contact the seller or a station window before travel day. They can tell you whether the passenger details can be corrected or the ticket needs to be rebooked.
