How to order food in China without a Chinese phone number

What you need for food delivery to your hotel

Ask reception whether food deliveries go to the lobby, an outside shelf, a gate or a delivery locker. Riders often cannot go straight to guest rooms. Even a hotel with delivery robots has its own collection process.

Get the hotel’s Chinese name and delivery address as text, including the right building or entrance. Paste it into the app and confirm the map pin. An English brand name alone can select another branch. At an apartment, ask the host for the gate and building details before placing an order.

You also need a working payment method and a way to stay reachable. A data-only eSIM supplies internet, not a Chinese mobile number. Keep the app open for order updates and messages, and check whether your home number can receive calls and texts in China.

Using Meituan with a foreign phone number

Open the official Meituan app, 美团, or its food-delivery entry, 美团外卖. At phone login, look for the country or region selector beside the number. Choose your actual code and receive the verification message on a number you control.

Do not assume that logging in means every later screen accepts the same number. The recipient-phone field, an account security check and the payment screen are separate steps. Check the delivery contact before spending time filling a basket.

If WeChat or Alipay offers the official Meituan mini-program, it is another entry to try. It can reuse a login or payment flow, but it is not a promise to skip phone or identity requirements. If the screen stops at a mainland-only number or a review you cannot complete, move to the next option rather than entering random digits.

How to order delivery through Alipay

Search inside Alipay for 淘宝闪购, often called Taobao Instant or Taobao Shangou. Older instructions use the name Ele.me or 饿了么. Look for the official delivery service result rather than an unrelated merchant or an ordinary parcel-shopping listing.

Open the service, set your city and delivery address, then review the sign-in and contact details it requests. Being inside Alipay does not remove every extra account step. If it accepts your contact and offers your linked card at checkout, you can continue without downloading another full shopping app.

The Chinese menu can look dense, but you only need a few labels: 外卖 means food delivery, 地址 is address, 购物车 is cart and 订单 is orders. Use your phone’s screenshot translation for item descriptions and choices. A dish photo helps you recognise it, but it does not tell you its size, ingredients or whether rice is included.

Choosing food and checking delivery details before payment

Start with a nearby open restaurant and a straightforward meal. Check the estimated arrival time, minimum order, delivery charge and packaging fees. The attractive price on a restaurant card may depend on a coupon, membership or a larger basket.

Choose the dish options carefully: portion, flavour, extras and spice level. 不辣 asks for no chilli; it is not an ingredient or allergy guarantee. For a serious food allergy, contact the restaurant directly and skip the order if you cannot confirm the meal is suitable.

   Check the Chinese hotel name, correct branch and building or entrance. Choose the collection point agreed with reception.

   Use a number and contact route that work for this order. If the hotel agrees to help, let staff decide which contact they can monitor. Their landline is not a substitute for your account’s SMS verification.

3. 3Review the total and payment method

   Look at the final food, packaging and delivery total. Select the offered payment method and complete any bank approval. If a linked foreign card is rejected, check the payment error rather than rebuilding the same basket repeatedly.

How to collect your food delivery at the hotel

After paying, look for the order confirmation and delivery status. Watch for a message or call as the rider approaches. If you cannot discuss directions in Chinese, use the order’s chat and ask reception to help with the entrance.

Agree the collection point with the hotel and put it in the delivery instructions. If reception does not accept food, meet the rider at the entrance instead. Do not request room delivery when the building will not allow it.

Show your order when collecting and check the shop or recipient label before taking a bag from a shared shelf. If the order says delivered but you cannot find it, check the chat and the hotel’s collection point before reporting it missing.

What to do if you cannot complete a delivery order

If the app insists on a mainland mobile number, does not deliver a login code or keeps returning an identity warning, ask whether reception can help you order. Agree how you will reimburse them and where you will collect the food before they submit anything.

A hotel contact used with staff’s agreement can help a rider find you. Borrowing someone’s login or filling a phone field with a made-up number is different: it can leave the rider calling an unrelated person while your food waits outside.

If you expect to order often during a longer trip, consider a local voice-and-SMS SIM rather than a data-only plan. It makes local contact easier, but a new number still does not resolve every account restriction. For one late dinner, pickup from a nearby restaurant may be quicker.

If your bank shows a charge but the app has not confirmed an order, check both the order list and payment status before placing another one. Ask the platform whether the first order exists; a pending bank authorization alone is not a reason to pay twice.

Ordering at a restaurant using a table QR code

If you are already sitting in the restaurant, scan its table code with the app indicated on the sign. That mini-program belongs to the restaurant’s ordering system, so its login and phone rules can differ from Meituan delivery.

When it insists on a number you do not have, ask the server to take the order or show you another menu. Pointing to a dish photo and confirming the price is often enough. You do not need to solve a delivery account to eat at the table.
