Gulangyu ferry: passport tickets, piers & an island walk

For a first daytime visit to Gulangyu, book an ordinary tourist ferry from Dongdu’s Xiamen International Cruise Center to Sanqiutian. The standard RMB 35 fare includes one return within 20 days. Reserve the crossing first, then plan a walking day around the island’s historic lanes, Sunlight Rock and the southern shore.

Which ferry terminal and ticket should you choose?

During the day, use a tourist service from Dongdu (东渡客运码头), also called Xiamen International Cruise Center or Xiagu Wharf, to Sanqiutian (三丘田) or Neicuo’ao (内厝澳). Sanqiutian is convenient for the main historic lanes; Neicuo’ao suits a walk beginning on the island’s western side. Both have ordinary sailings listed at RMB 35 and premium sailings at RMB 80. Choose an ordinary sailing when available if the crossing is all you need.

The ferry terminal opposite Zhongshan Road serves visitors at night. Xiamen Ferry’s purchase FAQ lists tourist boarding there in Hall 2 from 17:50 in October–May, or 18:50 in June–September. A daytime Dongdu booking and a night Lundu booking start at different places, so match your ride to the full departure-terminal name on the ticket.

How to book with a foreign passport

The operator’s online-booking FAQ allows overseas visitors to register using a real-name-verified Alipay account and its QR login. Open the official 屿见厦门 service, add the traveler, select the appropriate other-document type and enter the passport number. Choose the outbound route, date and sailing, complete payment and save the confirmed order. Tickets are released up to 15 days ahead, including the travel day.

If registration does not work, use the staffed ticket counter with your original passport; same-day availability still applies. Allow about an hour at the terminal on your first visit for document handling and security. The boarding FAQ sets the cutoff ten minutes before departure. Some passports need a printed boarding credential or manual verification, so show the order and passport at the counter before joining the boarding line.

If your Alipay account still needs setup, follow our Alipay instructions for foreign visitors before trying the ferry purchase. Keep the boarding credential with your passport for the return as well.

Getting from your hotel to Dongdu

From a hotel near Zhongshan Road, a taxi to Xiamen International Cruise Center is the simplest morning connection. Allow roughly 20–30 minutes for the drive, longer in traffic, plus your terminal buffer. For public transport, take Metro Line 2 to Cruise Center station and follow the signs toward the ferry terminal; allow another 15–20 minutes for the walk and finding the correct hall.

If ordinary Dongdu tickets are sold out, first try another sailing or the other island arrival pier. The operator also lists a First Pier–Songyu ferry at RMB 2 one way, connecting to Songyu–Neicuo’ao at RMB 35. This crosses via Haicang and adds a transfer, so secure that island sailing before choosing it; the first ferry ticket alone does not get you onto Gulangyu.

A walking route from Sanqiutian

Leave Sanqiutian and head inland along Sanming Road toward the junction with Guxin Road, then continue through the lanes around Bagua Building toward Longtou Road. This gives you the historic residential streets before the busier snack-shopping area. Pause for lunch around Longtou Road, then continue toward Sunlight Rock if you want the rooftop and sea views.

After Sunlight Rock, walk toward Shuzhuang Garden on the southern shore. Its seaside paths and Piano Museum make a useful final paid stop before returning along the southeastern waterfront toward Sanqiutian. Choose Sunlight Rock or the garden for a relaxed half-day; visiting both with lane wandering and lunch works better with five to six hours on the island.

The ferry fare covers transport, while paid island attractions have separate tickets. If you book a music performance, use its exact venue and session as the anchor for the walk; Bagua Building and the Organ Art Center are different stops. For a shorter or hot-weather visit, skip the Sunlight Rock climb and spend the time in shaded lanes and by the shore. The island’s hills and steps still make this a substantial walking day.

Suggested Sanqiutian day walk · sequence only, not a scale map
  1. Sanqiutian → Sanming Road and Guxin Road lanes
  2. Bagua Building area → Longtou Road lunch
  3. Optional Sunlight Rock climb
  4. Shuzhuang Garden and Piano Museum, or southern shore
  5. Southeastern waterfront → Sanqiutian
  6. Return ferry → confirm the Xiamen arrival terminal

Returning to Xiamen: validity and evening piers

An individual tourist ticket includes one return within 20 days. You can leave from Sanqiutian or Neicuo’ao within their operating times, even if you arrived at the other pier, and the return is not tied to the outbound sailing time. Join the appropriate return queue with the document and boarding credential used for the trip.

For a simple October day trip, aim to return from Sanqiutian before the published 17:40 daytime changeover if you want Dongdu. Evening services from Sanqiutian return to Xiamen Ferry Terminal near Zhongshan Road. Read the destination at the pier before boarding and arrange pickup from that terminal. Neicuo’ao is not an all-night return option.

The operator lists overnight returns from Piano Pier between 01:00 and 05:00, on the hour, rather than continuous overnight departures from Sanqiutian. Most day visitors can avoid that complication by leaving after dinner or before the daytime changeover. Keep an airport or train departure off the same tight timetable: weather and ferry queues can delay the crossing. See the Xiamen two-day itinerary for a full island day.

Reviewed October 23, 2026 against Xiamen Ferry’s purchase and boarding FAQs. Ordinary fares, passport handling and return validity follow those pages. The operator’s FAQs differ on some summer evening cutovers, so use the sailing and destination displayed on the live booking and pier notice. Walking and transfer times are planning allowances.
