Two days in Xiamen: old streets, coast & Gulangyu
This plan keeps the city and Gulangyu on separate days. Swap the order to fit your confirmed ferry and the weather. Treat each day as a few geographic anchors with room between them, not a schedule that promises to include every temple, museum and beach.

3 min readDay 1 · Begin around Zhongshan Road
Start with Zhongshan Road (中山路) and its arcaded streets. Explore a short section, look up at the façades and choose one nearby food stop. A useful morning is a walk and a proper sit-down break, rather than an attempt to taste every advertised ‘must-eat’ snack.
Use Lujiang Road (鹭江道) as a waterfront anchor afterward. Looking across toward Gulangyu can help you understand the geography, but do not treat the nearest ferry terminal as the start of tomorrow’s tourist route. Keep the departure pier from your actual booking saved separately.
Day 1 · Choose one coastal stretch
In the afternoon, travel to a specific part of Huandao Road (环岛路), then walk a manageable section of coast. The area near Hulishan Fortress (胡里山炮台) is one possible anchor. Decide whether you want a seafront walk or a ticketed interior visit and budget the time accordingly.
Do not set yourself the task of covering the entire coastal road. A short walk, time to sit and an easy return can make a better afternoon. In rain or strong sun, shorten the outdoor part and have a longer meal instead of forcing the original distance.
Day 2 · Give Gulangyu its own day
Arrive at the booked ferry terminal with your original identification and enough time for the operator’s boarding procedures. After reaching Gulangyu (鼓浪屿), make the arrival pier your first map pin. Choose a simple route through public streets, a lunch stop and one attraction if you want a ticketed visit.
The island’s architecture and lanes are part of the visit, so do not rush from one entrance queue to another. Confirm the correct return pier and route before extending the walk. Keep the evening on Xiamen Island flexible in case boarding or the return transfer takes longer than expected.
- Confirm the departure terminal and booked sailing.
- Carry the original passport or other document used to book.
- Keep return-route information available offline.
For one day, or a more relaxed third day
With one full day, choose either Gulangyu or a city-and-coast day. Combining both can mean more queuing and transferring than exploring. A short layover should be planned from the actual airport schedule rather than from this two-day itinerary.
For a third day, revisit a neighborhood you liked or choose one additional site after checking its access arrangements. A university campus, temple and botanical garden are separate visits; do not assume they share unrestricted entry. Leave airport or station transfers outside your sightseeing blocks.
