Southeast China · A city guide
XiamenA little closer.
Xiamen is a good place to trade a packed checklist for sea air and a slower meal. Give Gulangyu its own day, explore the arcaded streets around Zhongshan Road, and save a stretch of coast for an easy walk. A little ferry planning makes the rest of the trip much simpler.

Xiamen essentials
Choose between city convenience and the coast
The Zhongshan Road and Lujiang Road areas work well for old-city streets, meals and waterfront views. A base farther along the Huandao Road coast suits travelers who prefer a beach-side atmosphere. Compare transport to your actual hotel rather than assuming every sea-view address is equally convenient.
Staying on Gulangyu is a different plan: luggage, ferry travel and island walking become part of your arrival. For a first short visit, a Xiamen Island base and a separate Gulangyu day can keep things straightforward. Check your chosen accommodation’s precise arrival instructions.
Book the Gulangyu crossing before planning the island day
Use Xiamen Ferry’s tourist booking information and confirm the departure terminal printed on your ticket. The nearest pier to a waterfront hotel is not automatically the correct tourist departure point. The operator has separate tourist and resident route information.
The official online FAQ explains passport booking through its supported registration flow. Bring the original booking document and allow time for staffed checks if your document does not work at an automatic gate. The ferry ticket and tickets for individual island attractions are separate matters.
Keep the mainland, island and station names clear
Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN), Xiamen Railway Station and Xiamen North Railway Station are different arrival points. Xiamen North is off Xiamen Island, so compare the whole transfer to your hotel. Do not tell a driver only ‘Xiamen station’ if your booking specifies the north station.
Combine local transport with short walking sections around the city. On Gulangyu, plan on walking and keep luggage light. Save your ferry terminal and accommodation in Chinese, and check the day’s route and return information before leaving the hotel.
Leave room for heat, rain and food stops
For a coastal afternoon, check wind and rain as well as temperature. Strong weather can affect ferry operations, and a ticket alone does not guarantee that every sailing will operate. Keep an alternative city day available and use the operator’s latest notices for any disruption.
For everyday purchases, prepare a payment app and a backup. Choose small meals across the day rather than filling up at every stall. Save dish names in Chinese; seafood, peanuts and other ingredients require a direct conversation if dietary requirements matter to you.
