Chengdu Panda Base: tickets, gates & a morning route
For a first visit to Chengdu Panda Base, book morning admission and choose your entrance before arranging transport. The South Gate suits a compact visit around the original panda villas; the West Gate works well for the newer pavilions and a longer trip across the base. Allow three to four hours inside for a focused visit, plus the journey from central Chengdu.

Tickets, passport booking and opening hours
Standard adult admission costs RMB 55. Book up to 14 days ahead through the official WeChat account or mini program, or an authorized seller named on the Panda Base ticket page, which links to Trip.com. Choose your date and morning or afternoon entry, enter the passport details and carry that original document to admission. The attraction is Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, not Panda Valley in Dujiangyan.
From March through October, morning entry begins at 07:30; afternoon admission runs 12:00–17:00 and clearance begins at 18:00. November–February starts at 08:00, ends admission at 16:30 and begins clearance at 17:30. An afternoon ticket does not provide morning entry. For child, student or senior tickets, use the eligibility terms on the official page before paying.
If online payment fails, the base’s ticket guidance provides an on-site window fallback subject to remaining availability. On a busy weekend, solve the booking before travelling rather than depending on that fallback. Our Alipay guide covers payment setup if you are using Chinese booking channels.
South Gate or West Gate?
Choose South Gate for a shorter walk around the original villas, Sun Nursery and red-panda areas. Choose West Gate for the Panda Creek Valley and Panda Forest pavilions, with time to use the sightseeing bus toward the older area. Neither entrance guarantees short queues or active pandas; the useful difference is where your visit starts.
The gates have different metro connections. The official transport page gives Line 3 to Panda Avenue, Exit A, then bus 408 for South Gate; or Line 3 to Junqu General Hospital, Exit B, then bus 409 for West Gate. The latter bus ride takes about ten minutes. These public shuttles are separate from the bus ticket inside the base.
| Entrance | Metro connection | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| South Gate | Line 3 → Panda Avenue A → 408 | Original villas; a compact first visit |
| West Gate | Line 3 → Junqu General Hospital B → 409 | Newer pavilions; a longer crossing |
| Taxi to either gate | Select the exact gate in the destination | Early arrival or a family group |
A three-hour route from South Gate
After entry, take the current visitor map and walk toward the original Panda Villa area. Spend the first hour at two or three open enclosures where pandas are visible, then continue to Sun Giant Panda Nursery House. A nursery’s name describes the facility; it does not mean newborn cubs are on display that day.
Continue through the red-panda viewing area, return past Swan Lake and finish at South Gate. Leave time for the Giant Panda Museum if it is open and you want the conservation exhibits. This compact route avoids spending the morning crossing the entire site. Allow three hours, or four with a museum visit and longer viewing stops.
If He Hua, usually called Hua Hua, is your main reason for coming, ask at entry for the current viewing location and access arrangements before joining a queue. Decide how much of the visit you want to spend waiting. For a general panda visit, the other open enclosures often make better use of that time.
- South Gate → current map and enclosure information
- Original Panda Villa area → open viewing enclosures
- Sun Giant Panda Nursery House
- Red-panda viewing area → Swan Lake
- Optional Giant Panda Museum
- South Gate → 408 back to Panda Avenue
A longer visit from West Gate and the sightseeing bus
For a broader visit, enter West Gate, explore the Panda Creek Valley pavilions, then use the bus toward Star Giant Panda Nursery House. Continue toward the original villas and Sun Nursery before leaving through South Gate. Allow five to six hours with viewing stops and lunch around the signed food areas near Panda Pedestrian Street; this is a longer alternative to the compact route, not an extra loop to add afterward.
The internal sightseeing-bus ticket is RMB 30 per person for the day, with boarding at its designated stops. The official stop list differs by direction: check the West-to-South service before boarding. A ticket does not reserve a seat or remove the queue each time you get back on. Use the bus for the larger gaps and explore nearby enclosures together on foot.
Arrival timing and the trip back to Chengdu
A morning start is a useful default, especially in hot weather, when outdoor activity can fall as the day warms up. Cooler days can still offer good afternoon viewing. Avoid treating a social-media feeding time as a published performance: animal care determines the actual routine.
For an opening-time visit, a taxi is simpler than relying on the first metro and shuttle connections. The base’s transport page estimates around 25–35 minutes and RMB 40 from Chunxi Road; use that as a reference, with extra time for congestion and the walk from the designated drop-off. Make the gate part of the destination when booking.
Return by 408 from South Gate to Panda Avenue, or 409 from West Gate to Junqu General Hospital, then take Line 3 into the city. If you leave by a different gate, arrange your ride from that gate’s signed pickup area. Keep the afternoon flexible for tea and a meal using the Chengdu three-day itinerary.
Reviewed October 23, 2026 against the Panda Base’s English ticket, transport and sightseeing-bus pages. Visiting durations are planning estimates. Enclosure access and the location or visibility of individual pandas depend on animal care and daily operations.
