Southwest China · A city guide

ChengduA little closer.

Chengdu is a city where a booked panda visit and a long, unplanned tea break can belong to the same trip. Give the major outing a clear morning, then spend the rest of your stay on smaller neighborhood routes and meals. These guides explain the decisions behind the itinerary so you can adapt it to your interests instead of chasing every famous stop.

Chengdu essentials

Choose a central base with a useful metro connection

The Tianfu Square and Chunxi Road areas are useful starting points for a central-city visit. A base near People’s Park suits travelers who want quieter walking and tea breaks. Compare the actual metro entrance, hotel access and surrounding streets rather than relying on a listing that simply says ‘city center’.

The Panda Base is a separate outing from a central neighborhood walk. Choose your hotel for the whole trip, not only the first morning’s attraction. A convenient dinner area and a straightforward return journey can matter more over three days than shaving a few minutes from one transfer.

Book the exact panda destination and session

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地) and Dujiangyan Panda Valley are different destinations. The Base’s official admission page explicitly distinguishes its tickets from Panda Valley access. Check the full destination name before booking a ticket or a transfer.

The Base uses real-name reservations and entry sessions, with seasonal hours. Keep your confirmed date and session, bring the original document used to reserve, and check the current entrance and visitor map before leaving. Park admission and optional sightseeing-bus arrangements should be checked separately.

Check which Chengdu airport or station you use

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) and Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) are different transfer points. Chengdu East Railway Station (成都东站) is also a specific destination, not a synonym for every train station in the city. Save the exact arrival name with the hotel’s Chinese address.

Use rail or the metro for longer city connections when the route suits your luggage and arrival time. A car can simplify the last stretch, but check the whole journey rather than comparing only driving time. For a late arrival, verify the live transport service before assuming a daytime route still operates.

Make room for meals and a proper tea break

A tea stop in People’s Park (人民公园) is an activity in its own right. Choose a seat, check the tea and any charges, and leave time to enjoy it. Follow a park morning with one neighborhood or cultural visit instead of turning the afternoon into a succession of long transfers.

For Sichuan food, decide your spice preferences before ordering and confirm ingredients with staff. Start with smaller portions, especially when combining snacks with a hotpot dinner. Carry a payment backup, water and your next destination in Chinese so the practical details do not dictate the pace of the day.
