Three days in Beijing: palace, hutongs & the Great Wall
Use this as an order of experiences, then rearrange the days around your confirmed Palace Museum reservation and the forecast. The plan assumes three full sightseeing days. Arrival and departure transfers need their own time, especially when your flight uses Daxing Airport.

3 min readDay 1 · Make the palace your main visit
Begin at the Palace Museum’s Meridian Gate (午门) for your booked session. The visiting route runs south to north, so plan the next destination around the exit rather than returning automatically to the entrance. Allow a generous half-day if you want to read displays and visit additional galleries.
Afterward, choose lunch and a rest before another activity. Jingshan Park (景山公园), north of the palace, can be a manageable next stop if you still want an outdoor view. The hill involves steps, and park admission is separate from the museum ticket.
- Confirm the museum date, session and original ID before leaving.
- Keep one nearby afternoon option instead of several timed attractions.
- Do not assume a palace reservation also includes Tian’anmen Square access.
Day 2 · Give the lanes and lakes some time
Make Shichahai (什刹海) your morning or afternoon anchor. A route through Yandaixie Street (烟袋斜街), Yinding Bridge (银锭桥) and the Houhai lakeside gives you a compact introduction to the area. The separate walking guide explains how to keep the route comfortable and respectful.
If you want the Temple of Heaven (天坛) as well, treat it as the other half-day and use transport between the areas. Check the ticket type for the buildings you want to enter: access to a park and access to its principal historic halls may differ.
Day 3 · Leave the city for one Great Wall section
Choose a named section, such as Mutianyu (慕田峪长城), rather than booking transport to a generic ‘Great Wall’ location. Give the outing its own day, including the journey, entry, any lift or shuttle you choose, a manageable wall walk and the return trip.
Agree on pickup and return arrangements before leaving. Avoid adding a palace visit or a tightly timed evening performance afterward. If visibility or weather is poor, move the wall day where your bookings permit and spend the city day on an indoor visit instead.
If you have less time or want a slower pace
For two days, decide whether the Great Wall or more city time is your priority. One palace-centered day plus one wall outing leaves little space for long neighborhood exploration. One palace day plus a lanes-and-parks day is a different trip, not an incomplete version of the three-day plan.
For a fourth day, add the Summer Palace (颐和园) or a museum that interests you, with its own reservation checks. Avoid adding it simply because it is famous. On departure day, choose a meal or short walk near the hotel and keep the station or airport transfer separate.
