Mutianyu Great Wall: tickets, transport & a day route
For a straightforward first visit to Mutianyu, take a morning coach or prearranged car from Beijing, ride the enclosed cable car to Tower 14 and walk a section of the wall before returning the same way. Allow a full day, with roughly three to four hours at the attraction. Choose the chairlift route instead if the toboggan is a priority: it reaches a different part of the wall and uses a separate ticket.

Which Mutianyu ticket should you buy?
The simplest option for this route is the official adult package with postcard admission, return shuttle bus and return enclosed cable car: RMB 200. The shuttle connects the visitor area to the uphill access area; it does not take you onto the wall. The cable car completes that climb and arrives near Tower 14.
The open chairlift and toboggan serve Tower 6 and belong to a different operator. A cable-car return ticket cannot be used for the toboggan. If you want to slide down, buy a ticket explicitly naming chairlift ascent and toboggan descent, and confirm its operating status before going up. Combining cable-car ascent with a toboggan descent also means walking from Tower 14 to Tower 6 and buying the separate ride tickets.

| Ticket | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Postcard admission | RMB 45 | Wall admission; no shuttle or lift |
| Admission + return shuttle | RMB 60 | Ground transport; walk up to the wall |
| Admission + shuttle + return cable car | RMB 200 | Recommended Tower 14 route |
| Cable car alone | RMB 100 one way / 140 return | Enclosed cable car; excludes entry and shuttle |
How to book with a foreign passport
Start from the official English ticket page. Select your visit date and available morning or afternoon session, then choose the package and add the traveler information requested by the form. Use the passport details of the person who will enter. Save the completed order and admission QR code, and take the original passport with you.
If checkout or payment does not work, ask your hotel to help with the official booking or use a booking service that accepts passports. Have it confirm the ride names as well as admission: an English listing saying ‘Great Wall ticket’ does not establish that it includes a lift. For the chairlift and slide, ask specifically for the Tower 6 operator’s ticket or purchase at its ticket window after checking availability.
Getting to Mutianyu from Beijing
For most independent visitors, a direct tourist coach is a useful middle ground between several public-bus transfers and a private car. The park’s transport page lists the Qianmen tourist hub service at RMB 80 return, with morning departures and afternoon returns from the P4 car park. Confirm the actual departure, return slot and meeting point when booking; allow about 1½–2 hours each way, longer in heavy traffic. The published coach fare does not include park admission.
A prearranged car suits a family or anyone who wants an earlier start. Agree the total return fare, waiting time and pickup point before leaving Beijing. A one-way ride-hailing booking leaves you needing another driver at the end of the day. Allow a similar road journey time, plus the trip between your hotel and the departure area.
For the public-bus option, Beijing’s March 2026 visitor directions give the 916 Express from Dongzhimen Transport Hub to Huairou Beidajie (怀柔北大街), followed by H23 toward Mutianyujingqu (慕田峪景区). From that stop, walk to the visitor area for admission and the scenic shuttle. Budget at least 2½–3 hours each way including transfers. Check the return H23 and 916 Express departures before starting the wall walk; this option is less forgiving if you finish late.
A practical walk from Tower 14
From the visitor center, take the shuttle and follow signs for the north ticket gate and enclosed cable car. At the top, start at Tower 14 and walk toward Tower 15. This gives a short out-and-back visit with views along the ridge; the park includes it in its suggested routes. Even this short walk has steps, so it is not a step-free outing.
If everyone is comfortable and the section is open, continue toward Towers 16–18 before retracing your steps to Tower 14. Allow roughly 1½–2 hours for walking, photographs and pauses on this longer version. Choose a turnaround time based on your descent and coach departure, rather than trying to reach a particular tower at all costs. Stay within the sections open that day.
For a toboggan day, replace this walk with chairlift ascent to Tower 6, a short walk toward Towers 7–8 and a return to Tower 6 for the slide. Ask the operator about age, height and accompaniment requirements before buying for a child. If the slide closes, follow the operator’s descent arrangements rather than assuming the enclosed cable car accepts your ticket.

- Visitor center → shuttle
- North gate → cable car
- Tower 14 → Tower 15
- Optional extension toward Tower 18
- Retrace to Tower 14 → cable car down
- Shuttle → coach or car pickup
How to fit the visit into one day
With an 08:00 departure from central Beijing, use 10:00 as a working arrival estimate. Allow the next hour for admission, shuttle, queues and ascent, then walk until about 12:30. Descend, eat near the visitor-center commercial area and meet a booked mid-afternoon return. This is an example schedule, not a coach timetable: move the whole plan to match your confirmed service.
Carry water and a snack so you can pause on the wall without depending on a particular food stall. Leave lunch until after descending if your route and energy allow; the visitor area gives you more choice. Avoid booking a tightly timed palace visit or train immediately after the expected return to Beijing. The three-day Beijing itinerary works better with the Great Wall as its own day.
Opening hours, weather and shorter visits
For March 16–November 15, 2026, the official park website lists weekday hours of 07:30–18:00 and weekend hours of 07:30–18:30. On weekdays, ticket sales end at 17:00 and admission at 17:30. Those closing times are not a promise of a final lift departure: confirm the lift cutoff on arrival and finish comfortably before it.
For a gentler visit, keep the Tower 14–15 out-and-back, take frequent rests and allow extra time for both lift queues. Wet stone, ice and strong wind can change what is sensible or open. If conditions make the wall unsuitable, move the trip to another day and use the Shichahai hutong walk as a flexible city option when local conditions allow.
Reviewed October 22, 2026. Adult prices were checked in Mutianyu’s official English booking system for October 23; opening hours and transport were checked against the park and Beijing government pages. Journey times are planning allowances. Lift operations and access to individual towers can change with weather or maintenance.
