North China · A city guide

BeijingA little closer.

Beijing asks you to plan the big visits and leave the smaller moments open. Book your palace day, give the Great Wall a separate outing, and make space for a lake-side walk or an unhurried meal. These guides connect the famous sights with the streets around them.

Beijing essentials

Choose a base for your main sightseeing days

Dongcheng is a useful starting area for a central-history itinerary; the Wangfujing and Dongsi areas give different mixes of shopping streets and smaller lanes. Around Shichahai, compare quiet side streets with the busier lake-front restaurant areas before choosing a room.

A metro entrance near your actual hotel matters more than an address described as ‘near the Forbidden City’. Beijing’s distances add up. Save the hotel’s Chinese address and decide which airport or railway station you will use before booking a transfer.

Book the Palace Museum before arranging the rest

The Palace Museum requires a real-name reservation and normally closes on Mondays, except statutory holidays. Its official ticket page lists sales from 20:00, seven days ahead. Use the current museum information to confirm your date and carry the original document used to book.

Tian’anmen Square, the Palace Museum and nearby museums are separate destinations with their own access arrangements. A ticket for one should not be treated as admission to all of them. Keep confirmation screenshots and leave time for security checks.

The Palace Museum entrance is Meridian Gate (午门). Choose the visitor entrance on your map, not simply a pin in the center of the palace complex.

Match your transfer to the correct arrival point

Beijing Capital (PEK) and Beijing Daxing (PKX) are different airports. Beijing South, Beijing West and Beijing Railway Station are also different destinations. Check the airport code or complete station name on your booking before comparing rail and car transfers.

Use the metro to move between districts, then walk a short local route. A road transfer can be helpful with luggage, but allow for traffic. Keep a separate day for the Great Wall; it is not an extra stop on an afternoon city walk.

Plan for exposed walks and everyday errands

The palace grounds, parks and Great Wall can involve long periods outside. Check the daily weather and air conditions, carry water and choose layers for the actual season. A smaller route with places to sit is often more enjoyable than an uninterrupted sightseeing march.

Set up your payment app before a first small purchase and carry a backup. Save Chinese destination names, an offline map and the next entrance pin. Give meals a proper place in the day rather than relying on a quick snack between distant sights.
