Tianmen Mountain: current C route, tickets & transport
Tianmen Mountain is open, but since October 13, 2026 its long main cableway has been fully suspended for upgrading. Only round-trip Route C operates: enter at the Mountain Gate, take the Tianmen Cave Express Cableway, visit the cave and use the escalators to reach the summit. Plan a full day for this route, including queues and the return to Zhangjiajie city.

What is open during the main cableway closure?
The operator’s current notice suspends Routes A and B and the one-way Routes 1 and 2. Route C uses the shorter Tianmen Cave Express Cableway in both directions, plus the seven-stage escalators between the cave and summit. The shuttle between the downtown cableway lower station and Mountain Gate continues to run.
Route C still gives access to the cave and summit sightseeing area, subject to daily closures. It does not include a ride up the famous long cableway or along the 99-bend mountain road. The operator lists ticket sales from 07:30 to 16:00 and passenger operations from 08:00; choose an early slot to leave time for the walk and descent.
Tickets, passport booking and extra charges
Budget around RMB 288 for a standard adult Route C package. Book the national forest park for your date and entry slot through the operator’s WeChat account, 张家界天门山5A景区, or a booking service accepting foreign passports. Enter the passport details, save the issued confirmation and bring the original passport. If a seller still displays A or B for a date during the closure, have it correct the route before you pay.
The C package includes return express cableway and return upper, seven-stage escalators. The lower escalator climbing from the square toward Tianmen Cave is a different ride; its uphill journey is excluded. Published visitor prices put that optional ascent at RMB 32. Choose it if you want to avoid the steep 999-step climb, then ask staff for the current descent arrangement on the way back.
| Item | Price basis | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Adult Route C package | Around RMB 288; confirm checkout | Admission, return express cableway and upper escalators |
| Lower cave-climbing escalator uphill | Published reference RMB 32 extra | Alternative to climbing the 999 steps |
| Summit forest sightseeing cable car | Published reference RMB 25 one way | Optional Cherry Bay–Yunmeng summit connection |
| Glass-walkway shoe covers | Extra charge at the chosen walkway | Separate from the main transport package |
Getting to the Mountain Gate from Zhangjiajie city
For a simple city start, take a taxi to the Tianmen Mountain cableway lower station in Guanliping, then use the scenic-area shuttle to Tianmen Mountain Gate (天门山山门). Allow about 20–30 minutes for the shuttle journey plus the wait, and show your booking to staff to confirm where to queue. The downtown station serves as a transfer point during the cableway works; Route C admission is at the mountain gate.
A car can instead take you directly to the Mountain Gate. Confirm that exact destination with the driver and arrange pickup from the same place. If staying in Wulingyuan, allow roughly 60–90 minutes to the city-side start or mountain gate in ordinary traffic. Tianmen Mountain and the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park are separate visits with separate tickets.
Following Route C to the cave and summit
After Mountain Gate admission, ride the express cableway up and follow the signed path to Tianmen Cave Square. Pause here for the full view of the arch and staircase. Climb the 999 steps if conditions and your knees allow, or buy the lower uphill escalator ride. At the cave, follow signs behind the opening to the seven-stage escalators through the mountain to the summit.
For a manageable summit walk, follow the West Line toward the West Glass Skywalk, Guigu or Ghost Valley Plank Road, the suspension bridge and Cherry Bay near Tianmen Temple. Return along the open West Line paths to the summit escalator entrance. Allow about 2½–3 hours for this out-and-back walk with stops; a glass section can be omitted using the signed ordinary path when available.
A longer circuit continues from Cherry Bay around the East Line back toward the upper escalator entrance. Add roughly 1–1½ hours and follow the current junction signs. The small forest cable car is an optional connection toward Yunmeng Fairy Summit, with separate payment and weather-dependent operation. Do not make it essential to a route you cannot comfortably finish on foot.
- City lower station → shuttle → Mountain Gate
- Express cableway up → Tianmen Cave Square
- 999 steps or paid lower escalator → cave
- Included upper escalators → summit
- West Line walk → return to upper escalators
- Cave → square → express cableway down
- Mountain Gate → shuttle back to the city
Time needed, weather and the return journey
Allow six to eight hours from the city transfer point back to it, including a summit walk, transport queues and food stops. Start early, carry a snack and use the signed food or rest areas around the summit hubs. Before walking away from the escalator entrance, ask staff for that day’s descent cutoff; the ticket-sales closing time does not tell you the last safe time to start back.
Descend by the upper escalators to the cave, continue to the square using the open descent route, then retrace the path to the express cableway. Ride down to Mountain Gate and take the shuttle to the downtown lower station, or meet your prearranged car at the gate. Keep a same-day train or flight several hours beyond your expected finish, with additional time for the station or airport transfer.
Cloud can obscure both the cave and cliff views, while wind, ice or maintenance can close individual walkways and the steps. If visibility is poor, a shorter cave-and-nearby-summit visit can be more sensible than completing the circuit. Ask the operator on +86 744 8366666 about current access if a particular walkway is central to your trip; for a severe-weather closure, move the mountain visit to another day.
Reviewed October 23, 2026. Route C and its transport inclusions follow the operator’s October 10 notice, effective October 13; no reopening date was announced there. RMB 288 is a current published adult planning price from China Discovery, rather than a live quote from the operator checkout. Recheck the selected date’s fare and any closures before paying.
