Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: a two-day route

Stay near Wulingyuan’s East Gate for this two-day visit. Spend the clearer day on the upper viewpoints: Bailong Elevator up, Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and the cableway down. Use the other day for Golden Whip Stream in the valley. This gives you the famous sandstone pillars and a quieter forest walk without buying every lift ticket or changing hotels between park days.

Which park, entrance and hotel base?

This guide covers Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in the Wulingyuan scenic area. Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and Golden Whip Stream are parts of this visit. Tianmen Mountain, near Zhangjiajie city, and the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge are separate attractions with separate tickets; neither fits into the route below as a quick extra stop.

Choose accommodation within walking distance of the East Gate, also called Wujiayu (吴家峪) or the Wulingyuan landmark gate (标志门). Check the actual walking route from the hotel: a property described as ‘Zhangjiajie’ can be in the city rather than beside the park. For the transfer from Zhangjiajie West railway station or the airport, allow about an hour by car as a planning estimate and specify your Wulingyuan hotel address.

The South Gate, commonly labelled Forest Park entrance (森林公园门票站), is a different access point near the other end of Golden Whip Stream. This plan starts and finishes at East Gate on both days, so you can leave luggage at one hotel. For a separate Tianmen day, see the wider Zhangjiajie itinerary.

Tickets, lift costs and passport booking

Buy the forest-park admission ticket that includes the internal shuttle buses. The usual product is valid for four consecutive days, so a two-day visit does not require two separate admission tickets. Cableways and the Bailong Elevator are additional unless the product explicitly includes them. Hunan’s official explanation of the combined tickets confirms that individual ride tickets remain an option.

Our recommended route uses only two paid lift journeys: Bailong up and Tianzi down. Set aside roughly RMB 400 per adult for admission, buses and those two rides, excluding food and transfers to Wulingyuan. This is a rounded budget, not a quoted package price. A four-ride or unlimited lift pass makes more sense only after you decide to add enough extra journeys.

Book through the park’s official ticket channel linked from its website, a hotel that can arrange passport tickets, or a booking service with an explicit passport option. Choose the first entry date, East Gate and entry slot if requested, and enter each visitor’s passport details. Carry that passport and the confirmed voucher to the gate. If a booking form only accepts a Chinese identity-card number, use a passport-capable seller or ask the staffed ticket office to process the booking.

Day 1: Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain

Take the earliest entry slot you can comfortably reach. At East Gate, ask for the shuttle toward Bailong Elevator (百龙天梯), buy or validate the ascent ticket and ride to the upper area. Follow the onward shuttle and walking signs for Yuanjiajie (袁家界). The elevator ride is short; the queue, shuttle waits and walking take much more of the morning.

Walk the Yuanjiajie viewpoints around Mihun Terrace (迷魂台), the pillar associated with Avatar and the First Bridge Under Heaven (天下第一桥). Allow roughly two hours here, including photographs and pauses. The paved paths still have stairs. Stop for an early lunch around the visitor facilities before the next transfer, or eat food brought from Wulingyuan.

From the Yuanjiajie shuttle area, follow the service toward Tianzi Mountain (天子山). Staff may route you through a transfer near Yangjiajie; tell them your destination is Tianzi rather than leaving the transport route for another scenic walk. At Tianzi, explore the viewpoints around Helong Park, then use the shuttle connection to Tianzi cableway. Take the cableway down and the valley shuttle back to East Gate.

Allow a full seven to nine hours from gate to gate, including queues and lunch. That range is an editorial allowance, not a guaranteed duration. At entry, note the day’s last cableway and return-bus times; work backward from them when deciding how long to stay at Yuanjiajie. A late start is a reason to shorten the viewpoints, not to add a rushed Yangjiajie detour.

  2. Bailong Elevator up → Yuanjiajie viewpoints
  3. Shuttle toward Tianzi; transfer if directed

  5. Tianzi cableway down → valley shuttle

Day 2: Golden Whip Stream from East Gate

Enter East Gate again and take the valley shuttle to Shuiraosimen (水绕四门). From there, follow the marked Golden Whip Stream path (金鞭溪) into the valley. For a relaxed morning, walk for 60–90 minutes, pause when you want and return along the same path. This out-and-back avoids committing to the whole valley and another hotel transfer.

Back at Shuiraosimen, take the shuttle to East Gate and have lunch in Wulingyuan. Allow about four to five hours for the outing including the buses and rests. Carry water and keep snacks packed away around monkeys. Although the valley is gentler than the upper viewpoints, wet paving and occasional steps still need care.

If you prefer a through-walk, continue roughly seven kilometres along the stream toward the South Gate, allowing around three hours of walking plus stops. Arrange a road transfer from that gate back to your East Gate hotel. Make this choice before setting off: it changes your exit and return transport. Adding Huangshizhai as well would turn the day into a longer outing with another climb or cableway ticket.

Adjusting for fog, queues or one available day

Use the clearer forecast for Yuanjiajie and Tianzi: low cloud can hide the views you came for. If your bookings allow, swap the order of the two days and walk Golden Whip Stream first. In heavy rain or an official closure, follow the park notice rather than treating the valley as an automatic safe alternative.

With one day, choose the upper route if the weather is clear and you can enter early. If queues consume the morning, reduce time at the secondary viewpoints and keep the descent connection. Avoid adding Ten-Mile Gallery, Yangjiajie and Huangshizhai simply because they appear on the same map. For anyone needing a much shorter visit, use the Golden Whip out-and-back and save the upper viewpoints for a longer visit.

Before each departure from your hotel, confirm the open gate, any transport changes and the last descent and exit services. Carry the hotel address and keep a screenshot of the current park map available offline. The numbered route here explains the sequence; it does not replace signs or staff directions when shuttle services change.
