Three days in Xi’an: the old city & beyond

This suggested route gives the Terracotta Warriors their own day and keeps the other days focused on the city. Use it as a flexible order of activities, not a timetable. Move the museum day to match your confirmed reservation and adjust outdoor time to the forecast.

Day 1 · Find your bearings in the old city

Start around the Bell Tower (钟楼) and Drum Tower (鼓楼) area to understand the center. You can use the towers as landmarks without deciding to enter both. Choose one ticketed interior if it interests you, then leave time for streets, food and a break.

Later, head toward the City Wall and Yongning Gate (永宁门), also called South Gate. Confirm which entrance you are using and check current ticket arrangements. Choose a comfortable wall segment instead of treating a full circuit as compulsory. The exposed walkway feels different from a shaded street.

Day 2 · Give the Terracotta Warriors a separate outing

Book the Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum before finalizing your departure time. Carry the passport used for the reservation and allow time for the transfer, entry checks and the walk into the exhibition area. A museum slot is not the time to leave your hotel.

Choose your level of detail: a focused visit to the warrior exhibitions or a longer day including the other part of the museum site. Do not promise yourself a major downtown museum and a full City Wall outing afterward. Return with time for a simple dinner and keep the evening flexible.

  • Confirm the reservation, identity details and current opening notice.
  • Plan both the outward and return journeys before leaving.
  • Keep the reservation confirmation available offline.

Day 3 · Explore the southern district

Use the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda area (大雁塔) as the day’s geographic anchor. Decide whether your interest is the pagoda’s religious and historic setting, the surrounding public spaces or an evening walk through the Datang Everbright City area (大唐不夜城). Nearby does not mean every attraction shares one ticket.

If you want to add a museum, verify its current location, reservation channel and access arrangements first. Reserve that visit as the main activity of one half-day. Do not plan around an assumed fountain or performance schedule; check the day’s official announcement.

If you only have two days

Keep one old-city day and one museum outing. Choose either a wall walk or a longer food-and-streets afternoon on the first day, according to your interests. Save the southern district for another visit rather than compressing all three areas into every day.

For an arrival evening, a meal near the hotel is enough. For departure morning, a small local walk can be more useful than another ticketed sight. Check whether your train leaves from Xi’an North or Xi’an Railway Station, and budget the transfer accordingly.
