Three days in Nanjing: city walls, Purple Mountain & a Qinhuai evening

This plan divides Nanjing into geographic blocks and leaves space for history to be more than a photograph. Give the lake-and-wall area one day, Purple Mountain another, then choose a cultural focus and a river evening. Adjust the order to confirmed reservations and your interests; a late arrival or early departure is travel time rather than another complete sightseeing day.

Before Day 1 · Choose a base and reserve the actual sites

Compare a central base such as Xinjiekou with a hotel near the river or Xuanwu Lake. Save its Chinese address and the nearest practical metro entrance. Check whether you arrive at Nanjing Railway Station or Nanjing South so the first transfer matches the ticket, especially if you are carrying luggage or arrive after a long journey.

List the specific sites you want on Purple Mountain and check their current admission or reservation requirements. If a museum or memorial is important, confirm its own schedule separately. Booking a broad sightseeing package or saving a mountain map is not the same as having an entry arrangement for every named venue.

Day 1 · Xuanwu Lake and one defined wall section

Use Xuanwu Lake (玄武湖) as a first outdoor anchor and choose a manageable park segment rather than trying to complete every shoreline path. Decide which lake entrance and finish point fit your hotel connection. A seated pause helps make the first day a comfortable introduction instead of a long circuit before you understand the city.

Add one named City Wall visitor section if its current entrance and route fit the area you have chosen. Check where you can leave the wall and whether the walk returns to the same access point. Seeing the wall beside the lake and walking on a ticketed section are different experiences; plan the one you actually want.

Day 2 · Choose a focused Purple Mountain route

Make Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum (中山陵) or Ming Xiaoling (明孝陵) the main cultural focus, then consider one additional site only after checking the connection. The broader Zhongshan scenic area contains substantial walks and separate visitor arrangements. A map showing several monuments together does not promise a quick continuous route through them all.

Leave time for the approach, steps, transport connections and a meal. Read the site context and allow the setting to be part of the visit rather than rushing immediately to another entrance. If the weather or queues slow the day, keep the main visit and trim the optional second site first.

Day 3 · Choose one cultural visit with time to read

Choose a museum, historic interior or memorial according to your interests, then check the exact venue’s address, entry process and current hours. Keep this as the morning’s main visit rather than fitting it between two distant outdoor stops. Different collections and memorial settings ask for different amounts of reading and attention.

Have lunch and a rest before the river evening. A substantial cultural visit does not need to be balanced by another major landmark immediately afterward. If you prefer a lighter day, use a small neighborhood walk instead and preserve the final evening for a meal and public riverside views.

Day 3 · Fuzimiao and the Qinhuai River at your own pace

Use Fuzimiao (夫子庙) as the evening’s map anchor and choose a compact public-street loop near the Qinhuai River (秦淮河). The area combines historic references with shops and visitor activity. Decide whether your interest is the streets, a particular interior or a boat ride; each uses the evening differently.

For a cruise, check the current pier, route, duration and boarding time separately. For dinner, look at a current menu and allow for a queue without a tight onward appointment. You can enjoy the riverside atmosphere without adding every illuminated viewpoint or making a boat ticket the measure of a successful evening.

  • Day 1: Xuanwu Lake and one chosen City Wall section.
  • Day 2: a main Purple Mountain site, with one optional addition.
  • Day 3: one cultural focus, a rest and a Qinhuai evening.

How to fit two days or protect a departure connection

With two full days, choose between the lake-and-wall day and a more substantial indoor cultural visit, keeping Purple Mountain only if it is a priority. Put the Qinhuai evening after a lighter afternoon rather than after a hillside route that has already used everyone’s energy. The itinerary is a selection of blocks, not a checklist to compress.

On departure day, confirm whether the train leaves from Nanjing or Nanjing South and allow time for luggage collection and station entry. In uncomfortable weather, shorten outdoor routes and choose a reserved indoor visit where it fits. A clear station plan and fewer geographic moves make the whole trip easier to adapt.
