Southwest China · A city guide

LijiangA little closer.

Lijiang offers more than one version of an old-town day. Dayan, Shuhe and Baisha have different locations and rhythms, while Jade Dragon Snow Mountain needs a separate plan. Start with a comfortable base and a smaller first day, then choose the neighborhood or mountain experience that fits your interests and the current visitor arrangements.

Lijiang essentials

Choose Dayan or another neighborhood deliberately

Dayan Old Town (大研古城) is a useful base for a first central old-town visit. Shuhe (束河) supports another setting and a different transfer pattern. Compare the hotel’s actual address, noise level, luggage access and nearest road pickup point rather than treating every property described as ‘Lijiang ancient town’ as the same location.

Ask how bags reach the accommodation if its entrance sits on a narrow or stepped lane. A car may need to stop at a nearby road instead of the door. A convenient dinner area and a clear return route can matter more across several nights than a room photograph with the most dramatic rooftop view.

Keep the arrival and first walk modest

Lijiang Sanyi International Airport uses LJG, and Lijiang Railway Station is 丽江站. Save the accommodation’s Chinese address and agreed drop-off point before arriving. The airport or station transfer, last lane approach and luggage handling are part of the journey, not details to solve after the car stops.

Use the first day for a smaller old-town walk, a meal and rest rather than an immediate high mountain outing. If altitude-related symptoms develop, do not continue ascending and seek appropriate medical advice. Fitness and a tightly booked schedule do not establish that a rapid change in elevation will suit every traveler.

Reserve the specific mountain route and read current notices

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山) admission, a particular cableway and optional performance or transport arrangements are different items. Check the exact route, session and passport-entry process before buying. Glacier Park and Spruce Meadow are named cableway choices with different visitor experiences, not interchangeable versions of one ride.

The operator’s March 2026 annual report says Yak Meadow cableway stopped operating from March 4, 2026 for redevelopment, with a replacement expected in 2028. Do not use an old three-cableway itinerary without checking current notices. Read live booking information for the routes available on your own date.

Give Shuhe or Baisha a separate walking block

UNESCO’s old-town property includes Dayan, Shuhe and Baisha (白沙), but these are distinct places rather than one continuous small pedestrian loop. Choose one northern neighborhood outing and confirm its transport. Keep a specific cultural interior, workshop or museum separate from a general public-street visit.

For a mountain day, leave the rest of the schedule flexible and pack according to current conditions. Blue Moon Valley is another route decision within the wider scenic outing, not a substitute for a confirmed cableway booking. Add longer excursions only when you have time for their complete journeys and a comfortable return.
