Two days in Kunming: Green Lake, old streets & Dianchi
This itinerary treats Kunming as a city worth spending time in, rather than a waiting room for another Yunnan destination. Give the first day to a compact park-and-old-street plan and the second to a chosen lakeside outing. If the Stone Forest is essential to your trip, add a day or replace the second day instead of squeezing it into the same schedule.

4 min readBefore Day 1 · Settle the arrival and departure geography
Check your arrival airport or station and save the hotel’s Chinese address. If you arrive late, keep the evening for a nearby meal and preparing the next morning. Kunming Railway Station and Kunming South Railway Station are different places; use the exact name when planning luggage storage and your final transfer.
Decide whether the trip has two full sightseeing days or two calendar dates containing travel. With only one full day, prioritize Green Lake and Old Street. A confirmed onward train is easier to accommodate when the last outing is near your base instead of at the far end of a lakeside route.
Day 1 · A slow morning around Green Lake
Begin at Green Lake Park (翠湖公园), using a specific entrance as your map anchor. Take a manageable loop along the water and stop where the public paths invite a pause. The park is a good introduction to everyday city life: walking, conversation and people using an open space without a ticketed sightseeing agenda.
Keep the morning flexible rather than assigning every pavilion a time slot. Bird activity changes with the season and conditions, so make the water and park itself the reason to visit. Choose a nearby seated break before heading toward lunch; you do not need to finish every path to have enjoyed the place.
Day 1 · Old Street, a noodle lunch and an evening landmark
Transfer to the Old Street area and use Guanghua Street (光华街) or Wenming Street (文明街) as a precise starting point. Browse one small loop rather than treating every named lane as a separate attraction. Qianwang Street (钱王街) and Jingxing Street (景星街) offer further choices if your energy and interests allow.
Choose rice noodles for lunch and ask about the broth, toppings and portion size before ordering. Later, consider the Golden Horse and Jade Rooster gateways (金马碧鸡坊) as another short central stop. Check the route from your actual endpoint, and let dinner determine the evening’s pace rather than adding another distant attraction.
Day 2 · Choose one Dianchi lakeside outing
Dianchi is a large lake, not a single entrance. Choose a named public lakeside area, such as Haigeng Park (海埂公园), and save the exact destination before setting out. Confirm current access and transport. A vague pin for the whole lake is less useful than knowing where you will arrive, walk and return.
Give the outing a generous half day, including the journey and a rest. If you want to add Western Hills, treat it as a separate decision with its own entrance, walking demands and visitor transport. A relaxed lakeside day does not need a cableway or every nearby scenic attraction to feel complete.
- Choose a named lakeside endpoint and a return connection.
- Keep lunch and a weather backup in the plan.
- Add another scenic area only after checking its complete route.
Make the second evening a different food experience
Use the final evening to try a dish you did not have on the first day. Small-pot rice noodles, another Yunnan noodle preparation or a vegetable dish can provide variety without a huge order. A menu photograph and the Chinese name of something you liked make ordering easier than repeating a broad request for ‘local food’.
If you browse a food street around Nanqiang (南强街), select one or two things deliberately and leave space to sit. Confirm prices and quantities before paying. Travelers with dietary requirements should ask about stock and sauces as well as visible ingredients; an attractive display alone cannot answer those questions.
How to add Shilin or adapt a short stay
Add a third day for the Stone Forest if its limestone formations are a priority. Settle the transport, visitor entrance and return before booking a timed evening connection. You can also replace the Dianchi day with Shilin, but the result is one city day and one excursion, not two full city days plus an extra attraction.
For rain or limited energy, keep the first day’s geography small and replace a longer outdoor outing with a nearby indoor stop or extended meal. Before departure, collect luggage and travel to the station printed on your ticket. Leaving with time to spare is a better finale than abandoning half an excursion to catch a train.
