East China · A city guide

HangzhouA little closer.

Hangzhou is best enjoyed in smaller pieces: a stretch of lake shore, a temple visit and an afternoon over tea. These guides connect the familiar sights without making a full lake circuit compulsory. Choose the shore or hillside that interests you, understand the transfer, and leave enough time to sit and notice the setting.

Choose lake access or rail convenience deliberately

The Hubin area on West Lake’s eastern side is a practical base for an introductory lake walk, restaurants and metro connections. A southern-shore stay suits a different walking plan. Check the hotel’s precise entrance and route to the water rather than treating every listing described as ‘West Lake’ as equally convenient.

A hotel near Hangzhou East Railway Station can simplify a short rail visit, but adds a journey to the scenery. Choose it for your travel pattern, not because the station name sounds central. For two nights, being able to return easily for a rest can matter more than one shorter arrival transfer.

Check the full railway-station name

Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport uses HGH. Hangzhou East (杭州东站), Hangzhou Railway Station (杭州站) and Hangzhou West (杭州西站) are different arrivals. Match the station on your ticket with the transfer to your accommodation, including the final walk and luggage access.

For the lake and Lingyin areas, use a current map and local transport notices. Scenic-area traffic arrangements can affect car access and the final approach. A metro journey followed by a short bus or walk may be more practical than assuming a taxi can reach every attraction entrance directly.

Free entry still needs planning at Lingyin

The Lingyin–Feilai Peak scenic area introduced free admission in December 2025, including Lingyin Temple and other temples in the area. The official announcement specifies real-name, time-slot reservations. Check the current booking process and availability rather than relying on older guides that describe separate admission charges.

Save the confirmed date, session and entrance instructions, with the original booking document where required. Lingyin is a separate outing from a short eastern-shore lake walk. Give the visit a generous block and check the return transfer before adding tea hills or another attraction.

Pick one lake section and one tea destination

West Lake is a landscape to explore, not a single attraction doorway. Public shore walks, boat services, islands and nearby ticketed venues have different arrangements. Choose a manageable walking section first, then add a boat or venue only if its current route and admission details fit your day.

Longjing Village and Meijiawu are named tea-area choices with their own journeys. Pick one for a seated tea stop, ask about the price and serving, and enjoy the setting before buying leaves. Tea tasting, a village walk and a guided farm experience are different activities; confirm what is actually offered.
